Yawei XuYawei Xu


Professor Yawei Xu, M.D., FESC, FACC and FAHA, is an extraordinary cardiologist. He is the director of the Department of Cardiology, Shanghai Tenth People’s Hospital, and the director of Pan-vascular Research Institute of Tongji University School of Medicine. He is currently serving as the chief scientist of the National Key Research and Development Program, the director of the National Clinical Key Specialty, the deputy director of the Chinese Society of Internal Medicine, the vice president of the Cardiovascular Physicians Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, the executive vice president and secretary general of the Chinese Hospital Association Cardiac Rehabilitation Management Specialized Committee, the former president and current honorary president of the Cardiovascular Physicians Branch of the Shanghai Medical Doctor Association, and the executive vice president and secretary general of the World Association of Chinese Cardiologists.

Professor Xu has been dedicated to the improvement and optimization for the diagnosis and treatment strategies for cardiovascular diseases. He specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of coronary artery diseases, and has established a "pre-hospital and in-hospital" information-based first aid platform for acute myocardial infarction, and pioneered the artificial intelligence automatic early-warning system (“Shanghai algorithm”). He was the first to carry out a "one-stop surgery" of atrial fibrillation ablation combined with left atrial appendage occlusion procedure in China, developed the original Chinese liquid nitrogen cryoablation equipment, and created a unique atrial fibrillation comprehensive closed-loop management model (AF-PACC). He pioneered the sequential treatment strategy of "extracorporeal shock wave combined with external counterpulsation followed by stem cell treatment" for ischemic cardiomyopathy with the aid of the precise evaluation of D-SPECT. He also presided over several large-scale multicenter clinical trials as a PI, including VIS PMS, TOTAL (the only PI in the Asia-Pacific region), VIVE, etc.

Professor Xu also presided over 16 scientific research projects funded by the Chinese government, such as the National Key Research and Development Program and the National Clinical Key Specialty. He has published 146 papers in top international journals such as NEJM, JAMA, and JACC, edited 5 books and held 45 authorized patents. He has won 7 awards, including the Second Prize of the Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award. He has been awarded honorary titles such as the Shanghai Model Worker, the First Ten Top Benevolent Physicians in Shanghai, the Shanghai Craftsman, and the Famous Doctor of China.
