He took the lead in launching genome-wide association studies (GWAS) to discover genetic basis for common diseases such as psoriasis. These studies have identified >500 new risk genetic alleles and prioritized >200 genes for human diseases. Dr. Zhang has published over 300 peer-reviewed papers on leading scientific journals, for example N Engl J Med (n=1), Nat Genet (n=22), Nat Commun (n=10). These publications have received 22,000 citations in Google Scholar and 14000 citations in Web of Science which earns an H-index of 64 for Dr. Zhang. Among the publications, 57 were cited by 23 textbooks (in multiple languages), 24 were cited by Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man (OMIM), and 14 were referenced in 16 international disease diagnosis and treatment guidelines. The GWAS for psoriasis, vitiligo, and leprosy was selected as one of the "Top Ten Scientific Advances in China". Whole exon sequencing (WES) discovered pathogenic genes of rare skin disorders such as porokeratosis was selected as "Top Ten Scientific and Technological Progress in Chinese Universities".

Dr. Zhang is currently serving as an editorial board member for six peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, British Journal of Dermatology, Journal of European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology, Journal of Dermatological Science, International Journal of Dermatology, and Annals of Dermatology. Dr. Zhang received honorary/visiting professorships from Mayo Clinic, University of British Columbia.

Dr. Zhang has won a second prize of China National Science and Technology Award and a second prize of China Natural Science Award, three first prizes of China Medical Science and Technology Award, an Outstanding Contribution Award from International Psoriasis Council (IPC), and a Lifetime Achievement Memorial Award from ILDS. Dr. Zhang initiated and chaired “International Symposium on Genomic Variation of Diseases” in China for ten consecutive years (2011-2022), which were highly appreciated in two editorials of Nature Genetics titled “Asking for more” and “Milestones in Anhui”. He has been invited to deliver keynote speeches in >40 international conferences. Dr. Zhang was among the "Top 2% of the World's Top Scientists List”(released by Stanford University) in 2023.
