Xi MaXi Ma

Xi Ma, Ph.D., Professor and doctoral supervisor of China Agricultural University (CAU), has been selected as one of the Young Scholars of Changjiang Scholars Program of the Ministry of Education of China, National Ten Thousand People's Plan for Leading Talents in Science and Technology Innovation, Ministry of Science and Technology's Plan for Young and Middle-aged Talents in Science and Technology Innovation.

He is mainly engaged in scientific research of the regulation of animal physiology and nutritional metabolism, and feeding microbial factories. In his basic research, he introduced and explained the theory of microbial "enterotype" in the study of diarrhea in weaned piglets at the first time, revealed the functional enterotype of China's local pig breeds with lower weaning diarrhea rate compared with DLY Hybrid Pigs from the group point of view, and elucidated the mechanism by which the enterotype characteristic bacteria secrete postbiotics to induce the group sensing of anti-weaning diarrhea. We found that Bacteroides from Tibetan pigs regulates the immune function of intestinal mucosa through γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), and Clostridium butyricum regulates the immune function of intestinal mucosa through butyric acid, and we elucidated the epigenetic modification mechanism by which triindolylpropionic acid (IPA) activates hepatic PXR receptor and removes mycotoxins and other hazardous substances of feed origin in vivo. On the basis of theoretical innovation, the molecular modification of host defense peptide of piglets was carried out to design immunomodulatory peptide with independent intellectual property rights and original innovation, improve stability and anti-enzymatic hydrolysis ability, and the efficient expression of probiotics modified by synthetic biology in vitro. After safety and effectiveness evaluation, it has the application potential of fully replacing feedstock antibiotics at the breeding end.

The above basic research work has been continuously funded by the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, Overseas and Hong Kong Macao cooperation projects, and Key Projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, etc. In the past five years, Xi Ma has published in the authoritative journals such as Adv Mater, Nano Today, Sci China Life Sci, J Nutr, etc., as a corresponding author, including 4 cover papers and 9 highly cited papers of Web of Science. Among these papers, the impact factor of one paper was higher than 30 and more than 10 papers were higher than 10. Xi Ma has been invited as editorial board member of Gut Microbes (IF5=12.4), J Anim Sci Biotechno and other authoritative journals. He has been honored as one of the highest cited scientists over the world of Clarivate and Elsevier both in 2022 and 2023.

As part of applied research work, he has presided over the 14th Five-Year Plan of the Ministry of Science and Technology, such as the key research and development projects (livestock and poultry gastrointestinal and reproductive health and nutritional control technology), and has been authorized to obtain 11 national invention patents, of which 4 have been transformed into feed antibiotic substitution in large-scale piglets, broilers and dairy farms, and has achieved significant economic and social benefits, and has been granted 15 million yuan or more of technology transfer in the past five years. He has been appointed as an expert of green food by China Green Food Development Center, and is the vice director of National Pig Industry Technology Innovation Strategy Alliance. Some of his achievements serve as the important part to win the second prize of National Scientific and Technological Progress and the second prize of National Technological Invention, and he has been awarded the first prize of China's Invention Entrepreneurial Achievement Award and the first prize of China's Invention Innovation Award, Yihe Youth Achievement Award, Yang Sheng Award.
