Wu ShiguoWu Shiguo

Prof. Wu Shiguo is dedicated to marine geology research, and has published more than 200 SCI papers in NC, MG and other journals, 12 monographs in English and Chinese, and 17 invention patents:

For the research of deepwater geohazards, Prof. Wu Shiguo completed 20 projects of the Fund Committee, including the national projects of the Ministry of Science and Technology, major national oil and gas special projects and major projects in Hainan Province, he realized a major breakthrough in the key technology of geologic risk evaluation of deepwater drilling projects in the South China Sea, and created the key technology of identification of deepwater shallow geologic features and risk evaluation of deepwater shallow geologic features in the South China Sea, and published the books of "Deepwater Geohazards in the South China Sea" (Science Press) and "Deeepwater Geohazards in the South China Sea" (Elsevier). Deeepwater Geohazards in the South China Sea" (Elsevier) in English and Chinese, and organized a manned deep-diving observation voyage on deep-water geohazards (Deepsea Warrior, 2022). The research results have been honored with the Special Prize of Hainan Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award in 2020 (ranked first). All the research results have been applied to the disaster assessment of CNOOC's deepwater oil and gas development in the South China Sea.

Prof. Wu Shiguo is a pioneer in seafloor tectonics and deepwater oil and gas research. He undertook two key projects of the National Foundation of China (NFC): "Subduction process and fate of the input plate in the southern part of the Mariana Sea and its constraints on shallow deformation" (92058213), "Tectonic evolution of the rift basin of thinned crust in the Nansha Sea area and the characteristic deepwater oil and gas system" (U1701245), and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), as well as the major breakthroughs in cutting edge sciences, which have been supported by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). He has participated in more than 10 research projects, such as "Tectonic Characteristics of Abyssal Shallow Tectonics and its Relationship with Fluid Activity at the Bottom of Abyss", Pilot A/B Project, and Major Scientific and Technological Special Projects, and participated in subduction observation cruises in subduction zones such as the Nankai Trough in Japan, and the Mariana Trench in Japan, which revealed the process and mechanism of the initial subduction, and explored the genesis and evolution of the deepest abyss in the world - the Challenger Deep. Challenger Deep, the world's deepest abyss.

Prof. Wu Shiguo has also plenty of achievements in natural gas hydrate research, as a post professor of the Academy of Sciences, he lectured the course of natural gas hydrate geology, authored the monograph "Geology of Natural Gas Hydrates", the first Chinese scholar to publish on hydrates in the South China Sea (Wu et al., MPG, 2005), published in Science Bulletin on the thinking of the South China Sea after the success of the trial mining of natural gas hydrates in the Shenhu Sea area, which has become a hot paper. At the same time, he developed geophysical exploration technology, undertook the project of Yazhou Bay Science and Technology City Administration, "Submarine Distributed Fiber Optic Seismic System and Application Demonstration" (2020-2023), the key project of the State Fund Committee, "Study on Stereoscopic Detection of South China Sea Natural Gas Hydrate and Reservoir Fine Evaluation Based on Fiber Optic Seismic System", and the 412 Pilot Special Project of the Academy of Sciences.

Prof. Wu Shiguo has been awarded more than 10 invention patents, and won the Individual Award of China Geophysical Science and Technology Progress Award 2022, and the Second Prize of Science and Technology Progress of China Geophysical Society.
