Wan Fang-Hao

Professor Wan Fang-Hao has been engaged in scientific research in the field of biological invasion and biological control since he received his Agronomy doctorate from the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences in 1989. Prof. Wan led number of national major projects, such as National Program on Key Basic Research Project (973 Program), National Natural Science Foundation of China (Key Project). Prof. Wan Fang-Hao has published over 780 research articles in peer-reviewed journals (among them, near 280 original articles were published in international journals, including Nat. Commun, Annu Rev Entomol, Science), 67 national invention patents and 19 monographs. He got 25 scientific and technological awards including the second prize of National Scientific and Technological Progress Award (Twice).

The key achievements and contributions include:

1. Establishment and practice "China Biological Invasion Prevention and Management Engineering System: China's framework" (4E Action and 4E+). The six developed technologies (the early warning and prevention, the rapid detection and monitoring, the suppression and interception, the integrative management, the omics-targeted precise-control, and the intelligent and accurate monitoring) and the platform construction of the "IAS1000 genome project", have comprehensively improved China's prevention and management of invasive alien species.
2. Building up a technical system of "regional-disaster reduction and whole process management" of invasive alien species mainly based on biological control, and effectively inhibited the outbreaks of the main invasive alien species (ragweed, alligator weed, crofton weed, mile-a-minute weed, tomato leaf miner, whitefly, etc.).
3. The new discipline of Invasion Biology with Chinese characteristics has been established. A systematic interdisciplinary discipline was developed from basic theory, technical method, scientific management, university textbooks, science popularization to comprehensive application.
4. Creation an international academic exchange platform for biological invasions. He took the lead six international biological invasion congress, and founded the "International Biological Invasion Congress Association", which greatly enhanced the international status and Chinese discourse right in the field of biological invasion.
