Tao XiaomingTao Xiaoming


Professor Tao Xiaoming is the founding Director of the Research Institute for Intelligent Wearable Systems and the Chair Professor of Textile Technology at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Professor Tao holds a BEng degree in textile engineering from East China Institute of Textile Science and Technology, China and a PhD in textile physics from the University of New South Wales, Australia. Fellow of the Textile Institute International, International Association for Advanced Materials, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and Hong Kong Textile and Clothing Society. She is the former world president of the Textile Institute International, the chief editor of Springer's "Handbook of Smart Textiles" and the Textile Institute International's "Textile Progress". She has served as the academic advisor for numerous key textile universities, national key laboratories and research institutes in the United States, Japan and mainland China.

Professor Tao is internationally recognized for her leading research work including smart textiles, photonic fibers and fabrics, fiber-based electronics and photonic devices, wearable technology, yarn manufacturing and textile composites.

Prof. Tao has presided over 100 research projects with some 1000 scientific publications, including over 400 journal papers in Nature, Nature Sustainability, and Nature Electronics etc. She published 7 monographs and was granted over 40 patents. item. H-index 81. She is ranked the first in the world top 2% most influential scientist list in the field of textile engineering by Stanford University in 2023. Professor Tao is the recipient of more than 50 awards for her outstanding research achievements. Among them are the Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology Award of the Chinese Academy of Engineering; the Honorary Fellowship of the Textile Institute International, the Institute’s highest individual award; and the Founder Award, the highest individual award of the American Fiber Society.
