Prof. Shaohua Dong, born in 1972 in Shouguang City, Shandong Province, Ph.D., director of pipeline technology and safety research center of China University of Petroleum (Beijing), professor and doctoral research supervisor at the College of Safety and Ocean Engineering, technical expert of pipeline integrity and safety engineering. The "leading talent of scientific and technological innovation" in the 10000-person plan. Belongs to the "Young and middle-aged leading talents in scientific and technological innovation" of the Ministry of Science and Technology Innovation talent promotion plan. The leader of Beijing emergency management discipline. The leader of Beijing advanced discipline concerning the "urban energy security and supply guarantee" and was selected for the "Tianshan talent project" of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Additionally, he has undertaken eight national key projects since 2017, including the "National Reserve Security Technology and Equipment Research and Development Project" (as the project chief manager), the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and the national major instrument projects.

Shaohua Dong’s Main Contributions:

Shaohua Dong, the founder of the pipeline integrity management in China, has been promoting and applying integrity management and technology in nearly 2 million kilometers of pipelines, gas pipelines, submarine pipelines, and oil and gas field gathering pipelines for 20 years since 2001. In a recent project, Shaohua Dong contributed to the technical achievements of pipeline integrity application in the industrialization of 60000 km of national backbone pipelines, such as West-to-East gas transmission, with an output value of nearly one billion yuan in three years, which obtained remarkable social benefits.

Besides, Shaohua Dong is a member of the 5th National Work Safety Expert Group, a member of the 1st National Work Safety Technical Committee, the chairman of NACE stag 75 Integrity Technical Committee of the American Corrosion Society, a member of the Special Equipment and Pressure Pipeline Technical committee of AQSIQ, and a deputy director of integrity. He worked at the Department of Storage and Transportation Professional Committee of the Chinese Petroleum Society, as Director of the Petroleum and Storage and Transportation Committee of the Beijing Petroleum Society. He worked as a member of the hydrogen embrittlement and stress corrosion committee of the China Corrosion Society, a member of the pressure pipeline committee of the China Corrosion Society, and a senior consulting expert of the American Society of Mechanical Engineering (ASME) with 30 years of working experience in the petroleum and petrochemical industries.

Shaohua Dong main contributions:

  1. He has developed a pipeline ultra-high-definition sub millimeter level three-axis digital integrated detector. He leads his research team to create high-precision multi-channel magnetic flux leakage, deformation, and suspension detectors, proposed a topology extreme deformation algorithm, and solved detection problems such as small deformation and small curvature. The probe spacing is 0.6 mm, which is better than the international 1.6 mm level, achieving one-time detection of defects, deformation, and direction, and overcoming the "bottleneck" problem;
  2. Established a technical system for evaluating the integrity of oil and gas pipelines. Proposed the theory of pipeline risk assessment based on big data, developed an automated identification system for pipeline weld film, pipeline risk assessment and emergency decision-making system, and published a total of 22 academic monographs and textbooks in the field of pipeline integrity;
  3. Invented non welding permanent repair technology and equipment for pipeline non-stop transportation. Invented organic injection agents for pipeline composite materials and equipment for domino effect pipeline repair processes, including epoxy injection technology and infiltrating fiber repair materials, to solve the problems of pressure reduction, volume reduction, and venting during the repair process, greatly improving production efficiency;
  4. Developed the accident inversion theory of multi hazard coupling for large oil storage was proposed, and the compressed air foam fire emergency equipment for large oil storage. Thus, forming the national oil storage integrity management and specification platform, leading the release and promotion of the national standard GB42097-2022 of the Aboveground Petroleum Storage (Depot), which solved the key problems and eliminated major safety hazards nationwide. Besides, he presided over 45 Standards such as national standards, and such achievements have been widely applied in the petroleum and petrochemical pipeline industry, and remarkable economic and social benefits have been accomplished accordingly. As one of the initiators, he has formed eight ISO international standards and other national and industrial standards. He worked to release and complete two international standards, ISO19345-1 and ISO19345-2, and integrity management standards for onshore pipelines and offshore oil and gas pipelines.

Shaohua Dong Recent Research Works:

Shaohua Dong supervised the research of more than 150 master and doctoral students, led 47 invention patents that have been authorized, and obtained 27 State Technological Innovation Awards and provincial and ministerial awards. He published more than 150 high-level papers, of which over 50 are indexed in SCI/EI, etc.
