After graduating from the Ocean University of China with a Ph.D., he worked in the Ocean University of China, the Institute of Oceanology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Tianjin University of Science and Technology. Currently, he is a professor and dean of College of Marine Science and Technology in China University of Geosciences (Wuhan). He was selected as a special endowed professor of Changjiang Scholars and Scholar of the New Century Outstanding Talents Program by the Chinese Ministry of Education, and, Tianjin Distinguished Professor, "The World's Top 100,000 Scientists" ranking as marine scientist, Elsevier High cited scholar, and other subsidies. He has published more than 440 academic papers in both Chinese and English journals, which include in PNAS, Water Research, Limnology & Oceanography, Progress in Oceanography, and the other famous oceanography journals, obtained 5 patents, won 7 scientific awards, and published 5 books.

His major research interesting is on Biological Oceanography and Marine Environmental Ecology. He has developed a global model for calculating the surface area and biovolume of marine phytoplankton cells, standardized the carbon measurement methods of marine phytoplankton biomass, and filled the gaps in research on transparent extracellular polymeric particulates (TEP), cyanobacteria nitrogen fixation, coccolith calcification, and diatom silicification in the China Seas and East Indian Ocean. He has also revealed the role of Synechococcus silicon accumulation in the global marine silicon-carbon coupling cycle. He has been the principal investigator of State Key Research and Development projects of China, National High-tech R&D Program (863 Program), National Natural Science Foundations, and Knowledge Innovative Project of Chinese Academy of Sciences. He has published more than 440 academic papers, with over 280 SCI articles and over 20,000 academic citations on Baidu, as well as more than 11,000 Google academic citations. He is a membership of UNESCO IOC/TrendsPO Working Group, and SOLAS Project Working Group, Associated Editor-in-Chief of the journal Frontiers in Marine Science, Journal of Sea Research, and Acta Oceanologica Sinica, He is also the Editorial board members of several other marine science related journals, such as Advances in Climate Change Research. Additionally, he is the director of the Marine Committee of the China Water Resources Strategic Research Society, and the deputy director of the Marine scientific investigation committee in China and the Benthos Committee of China.
