Ho, Kin ChungHo, Kin Chung


Prof. HO K, K.C. was the former Dean of School of Science and Technology and ‘ Ng Chun Man Professor in Environmental Science & Conservation’ of the Open University of Hong Kong (OUHK). After his retirement from OUHK in 2018, he has been appointed the Founding President of Hong Kong Academy of Environmental Science (HKAES) and Director of the Polar Research Institute of Hong Kong (PRIHK) . Academicaaly, he is currently Honorary Professor in the School of Marine Environment and Ecology of Shanghai Ocean University, Honorary Professor in Department of Geography, The University of Hong Kong and Court Member of the Hong Kong Baptist University.

He has visited the Higher Arctic for 20 times and the Antarctica for 4 times for scientific research and expedition. So far, he has published more than 500 research articles in refereed journals and international conference proceedings . He also published and edited 44 books , 8 sets of distance-education study materials , 4 sets of general environmental studies leaarning kits and more 20 technical reports for the Government, public corporations and NGOs.

Prof. Ho was a council member of the International Society on the Study of Harmful Algae (ISSHA) in 2005-2009. He was also the Chairperson of Local Organizing Committee of the 13th International Conference on Harmful Algae ( ICHA-2008), Chairperson of the Organizing Committee of 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th International Conference on Prevention and Management of Harmful Algal Blooms in the South China Sea (HABSCS), Chairperson of the Organizing Committee of the Mainland China-Hong Kong Conference on Regional Environmental Impact Assessment (REIA), Chairperson of the Organizing Committee of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau Environmental Forum , Chairperson of the Organizing Committee of Water Resource and Water Quality Forum in the South China cum relevant international conferences and Chairperson of the Organizing Committee of Cross Strait Forum on Science & Technology – New Energies and New Materials.

Professor Ho was conferred the “ National Character Environmental Achievement Award” in 2009, “ People of the Year - Scientific Chinese 2010” in 2011 and “ Leader of the Time Award: Beautiful China” in 2013 . In 2006, 2008 and 2010, Prof. Ho was conferred the “ Excellent Worker in Environmental Science & Technology Award” by the Chinese Society of Environmental Sciences (CSES) which is one of the most authoritative environmental institutions in China. In 2008, Prof. Ho and his research team was awarded the “Silver Medal” by the International Innovation Exhibition, Geneva in recognition of their distinguished contributions in developing the Haidex, an innovative index in predicting the appearance of harmful algal blooms (red tides), In 2009, Prof. Ho was awarded the “ National Character for Environmental Achievements Award ” by the Hong Kong Environmental Protection Association . His other received honours and awards include: “ Distinguished Leadership Award for Outstanding Contribution to Contemporary Society” by the American Biographical Institute (ABI) in 1997; “The 20th Century Award for Achievement” by International Biographical Centre at Cambridge in 1997; “ Key of Success in Research” by ABI in 1998; “ Excellent Research Paper Award ” by the Journal of Urban Environment and Ecology in 2000, “ President ’s Awards for Distinguished Achievements ” by the Open University of Hong Kong in 1997, 2001 and 2004 respectively. Last but not least, he was named “The Millennium Who ’s Who in Hong Kong ” in 2000 and “ Marquis Who's Who ” since 2007 . In 2022, Prof. Ho and his research team was awarded again a “ Silver Medal ” by the International Innovation Exhibition, Geneva in recognition of their innovative design of an advanced microalgae system for treating of wastewater. In May 2022, his team was award the “ Gold Medal ” by the World Genius Congress for contribution in development of a “ Microalgae-Plants-Fishes coexisted system for purifying polluted water together with generation of economical valuable algae powders” .
