Guang ZhuGuang Zhu

Prof. Guang ZHU obtained his Ph. D degree from the University of Maryland, College Park, USA. Currently, he is the full professor in the Division of Life Science and the Division of Bioengineering, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). He is the directors of cryo-EM facility and biomolecular NMR facility at HKUST. He has developed the “forward-backward” linear prediction methods for multidimensional NMR spectral processing and transvers-relaxation optimized NMR techniques to study the dynamics and to measure the NOEs of large proteins in solution. His group also discovered that the amino acid B-factors determined by x-ray crystallography follow a Gumbel distribution. He has published over 100 papers in international journals with more than 20000 citations. His current research interests are (1) structure-functional study of non-canonical nucleic acids and their complexes with proteins; (2) anti-ALS/FTD, and anti-cancerdrugscreening/design, and (3) the structural study of human DNA replication protein complexes.

His group determined many novel DNA and RNA G-quadruplexes structures, structures of the hOrc6/DNA complex and hMcm2-7 double hexamers and obtained 4 patents of small molecules targeting those G-quadruplexes. He was awarded with the National Scientific Award, Shenzhen Bureau of Innovative Technology (2014), and the WAN Tianjuan Prize in Magnetic Resonance (2002). He is also the chairperson of the Hong Kong Biophysics Society.
