Di ChenDi Chen


Professor Di Chen is a Chair professor and Chairman of the Department of Pharmacology, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology (SIAT) . His second appointment is the Director of the Research Center for Computer-Aided Drug Discovery, Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Professor Chen is the member of the Academic Committee of Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology. Before he joined the SIAT, he worked at Rush University, Chicago, serving as the Chairman of Biochemistry Department. He was the endowed and tenure Professor of Rush University. His research work was focusing on osteoarthritis and cartilage biology. His work was supported by the multiple fundings from National Institute of Health (NIH) in US, including 5R01, 1K02, 1R21 and New York stem cell (NYSTEM) funding. He has been serving as an editorial board member in 10 different scientific journals, including Arthritis Rheumatol, Bone Res, Osteoarthritis Cartilage, J Bone Miner Res, eLife, Arthritis Res Ther, J Biol Chem, J Cell Biochem, and Calcif Tissue Int. He also served as an Associate editor of J Orthop Transl. After he jointed Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology in 2020, he has been working on projects of osteoarthritis and genetic bone diseases. He obtained several fundings from National Nature Science Foundation of China (NSFC) . So far, he has published 295 SCI articles with 98 papers listed as first or corresponding authors . His papers have been cited over 32,000 times with H-index 90 . He has been elected by Elsevier as a highly cited scientist in China in 2021 and 2022. As a major contributor, he has won multiple awards in China , including National Science and Technology Progress Award (2nd place), Shanghai Medical Science and Technology Award (2nd place), Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award (2nd place), Ministry of Education Science and Technology Progress Award (first place), and Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award (first place). In 2009, he published a paper describing a genetic mouse model with osteoarthritis for the firat time . This work was reported by ABC News , Washington Post , US News & World Report and Forbes. In 2022, he published a paper with fully characterization of the mechanism of a disease called fibular hemimelia. Although this disease was first reported 300 years ago, but the mechanism of this disease was first delineated by Professor Chen’s group as a transient upregulation of β-catenin-BMP signaling in mesenchymal progenitor cells in early embryonic stage.
