Chunxiang ZhangChunxiang Zhang

Dr. Zhang, Chunxiang is an outstanding cardiologist and a renowned research scientist in cardiovascular diseases both in China and in the United States. He obtained his doctoral degree in cardiovascular medicine in China and a postdoctoral fellow training in cardiovascular pharmacology in the United States. He is currently a distinguished professor/chief physician of cardiology, the Director of a key laboratory of the Ministry of Education and the President of Southwest Medical University in China. Prior to going abroad, he had worked for 10 years in the cardiology department of the Affiliated Hospital, Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital, and Prince of Wales Hospital of The Chinese University of Hong Kong. From 1998 to 2019, he had successively held positions as Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, Full Professor and eventually the Endowed Chair Professor (The Deborah R. and Edgar D. Jannotta Presidential Professor) at several universities in the United States. Over his 22-year’s career in the United States, he had served as Director of the Vascular Injury Research at the Department of Medicine of University of Tennessee, Vice Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology and the Director of the Cardiovascular Research Laboratory at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, and the Chairman of the Department of Pharmacology and the Director of the Cardiovascular Research Center at Rush University. He had also held positions at the University of Alabama at Birmingham including the Tenured Professor and Director of Faculty Development and Promotion. Since September 2019, he has been recruited back to China.

Professor Zhang has long been engaged in research on cardiovascular diseases and cardiovascular pharmacology. He is a pioneer and leader in the field of non-coding RNA in cardiovascular diseases, making significant original contributions with international recognition. For example, he is the first in the world to identify that non-coding RNAs may play key roles in the pathogenesis of vascular diseases. His studies on non-coding RNAs have opened a new field in cardiovascular diseases. He has put forward and named microRNomics, which is now widely used in data analysis of non-coding RNAs in cardiovascular diseases. Dr. Zhang is also the first scientist who identified that non-coding RNAs could work as a novel class of hormone-like endocrine molecules that play important roles in cardiovascular diseases. In addition, Dr. Zhang is also one of the pioneers who found that blood and serum microparticles including non-coding RNAs within them may be important in cardiovascular diseases. Now, microparticle study is also a popular research area in cardiovascular medicine. More recently, Dr. Zhang has found that the non-coding RNA microenvironment in local tissues could be a key factor in cardiovascular disorders. Dr. Zhang has published over highly cited 190 peer-reviewed research articles in high-impact journals such as Science, JACC, Circulation, Circulation Research, European Heart Journal, Journal of Experimental Medicine, Cell Metabolism, Molecular Cell, and Nature Communications, with one research article being selected as the Best Manuscript Award by Circulation Research (h-index: 54; citations:15363). He is among the listed top 100,000 global scientists (Http:www.globalauthorid.com); the most cited researcher on Elsevier list; and the world’s top 2% leading scientists on the Stanford list. In 2022, he obtained the Outstanding Contribution Award from the Chinese Medical Education Association in recognition of his outstanding contributions to cardiovascular research both in the United States and in China.

In addition to his achievements in research and teaching in cardiovascular medicine, Dr. Zhang is engaged in other academic activities at both the national and international levels. Dr. Zhang is the Chair of the Events/Conference Committee for the International Society for Translational Medicine (ISTM), the President of the North American Chinese Association of Pharmacology, as well as the FACC and a Councilor of ACC at Chicago. He is currently a professional member of 6 academic Associations and Societies. He has served as Editor, Associate Editor, and Editorial Board member for 18 Peer-reviewed Journals. He is also the grant reviewer for 9 national and international research organizations. Since 2001, he has given over 100 invited seminars and talks at national meetings or at other universities. Dr. Zhang has also been invited to serve as chairperson in many international meetings. Now, Dr. Zhang is the Chairperson of 3 National Professional Associations in China.
