Cheng ShihuaCheng Shihua


Dr. Cheng Shihua is a research professor and doctor supervisor of China National Rice Research Institute (CNRRI). He was the Director General of CNRRI (2001-2019), Director of Chinese Center for Rice Improvement (2000-2021) and Principle Scientist of China Rice Research System (2007-2022). Currently, he is the Chairman of China Rice Green and High Efficiency Collaborative Innovation Alliance, Head of Expert Group for China’s Super Rice Research and Extension, the China Representative of International Rice Commission, FAO, the Chief-in-Editor of Chinese Journal of Rice Sciences and Honor Chief-in-Editor of Rice Science. He has so far published more than 300 papers, including 96 SCI papers, and 22 monographs, obtained 16 China Invention Patents and 30 Plant Variety Rights. He has made a great achievement in his rice research and won 5 China National Prizes for Natural Science, Technology Invention and Science & Technology Progress, and 6 Provincial and Ministerial First Prizes of Science & Technology Progress. He also was awarded many honors, such as China Agriculture Talents and National Advanced Worker, etc.

He established the theory of parent selection for super rice breeding and the technique approaches of selecting the intermediate types of indica and japonica as the parents for super rice breeding. He has developed 42 super rice varieties with late-stage vigor and extended them with 470 million hectare totally in China and India. It brought farmers significant income from planting super rice varieties. His creative research works have made prominent contributions to maintain China and world’s food security.
